Silvano Wendel, MD, PhD, is the Medical Director of the Sírio Libanês Hospital Blood Bank and of the Centro de Imunologia e Imunogenética, both in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Wendel is actively involved with ISBT Working Parties, the Global Blood Safety; Terminology for Red Cell Surface Antigens and also Working Party on Rare Blood Donors members submitting short articles to Immunohematology. Wendel was President of ISBT during 2010-2012, also served as chair of the Transfusion Transmitted Infectious Diseases Committee for the ISBT Working Party.

For the World Health Organization/Pan American Health Organization, he is the past chair of the Global Collaboration for Blood Safety (GCBS).

Wendel has served on AABB’s Annual Meeting Education Program Unit, the Transfusion Transmitted Diseases Committee, the Accreditation Program Committee and the International Activities Committee.

Wendel received his medical degree from Escola Paulista de Medicina/SP in 1981 and received additional medical training from the Hospital das Clinícas da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo in 1982 and 1983. In 1984, he earned the title of specialist in Hemotherapy from the Brazilian Society of Hematology and Hemotherapy, and in 2005 he received his doctorate from the Infectious Disease Department at the University of Sao Paulo.
